In sum, the thematic treatment of history suggests that the upper class will continue to oppress the lower class, with the collusion of the middle class, because it has the power to shape the historical narrative in spite of the other social forces opposed to it. Such a message is fitting for a novel published in , in the context of the suppression of labor movements and the left, first in the Primo de Rivera dictatorship of to , then in the Franco one from to Nevertheless, in spite of its pessimistic implications regarding historical transformation, since Savolta deals with a social conflict in which one side is suppressed, but the issue is not resolved, the novel may also be interpreted, in retrospect, as marking a transition, by focusing attention on the proletarian elephant in the dictatorial closet, and in that way anticipating the advent of PSOE as the ruling power at the national level from until the present, except for the years Hence, in retrospect, from the vantage point of the twenty-first century, La verdad sobre el caso Savolta anticipates two social transitions: from the dictatorship to a new period of labor activism; and from initial hopes regarding socialist democracy to disillusion regarding its outcome.

At the same time that the novel presents aspects of more than a century of Spanish history, it also provides a self-reflective, meta-historical commentary on how and why history is constructed, and on the contexts which determine its relevance and meaning. The latter had been the commander of the Republican garrison in the town at the start of the Civil War, and he had a trunk full of photos of the townspeople, covering decades, which Nadia inherited. The history that Manuel and Nadia construct together constitutes their effort to define who they are in relation to each other, and to establish how their identities are the result of the historical forces that produced them.


The history that is constructed in this context is not explicitly political; it does not explore in any detail, for example, ideologies of the left or right, class struggle, or the role of the Catholic Church in twentieth-century Spain. Although Jinete tends to focus on how individual lives are affected and shaped by major historical events and periods, rather than represent explicitly the ideologies accompanying the events, the novel has an allegorical dimension that alludes to the trajectory of liberalism in the period covered.

In this brief study I trace this allusive structure as a way of conveying the overarching social value affirmed in this complex novel.

Jinete is divided into three approximately equal parts. In the context of the novel, the fact that the doctor is unable to save the baby, which, according to the doctor, is stillborn, has an allegorical significance. The nightmarish quality of the kidnapping conveys disorientation, as well as traumatic experience, which in turn has several implications.

The inference of historical distortion is emphasized by the various motifs of disorientation in this narrated event. Distortion and disorientation may also be interpreted here as an allegory of historical trajectory.

Shortly after the war, the mummy of briefly comes to light, only to be stolen, and Manuel discovers her true historical identity and circumstances only decades later, in , again suggesting a parable of a liberal historical trajectory oppressed during the dictatorship, and evolving in its expression in the post-Franco decades. The final third of the novel creates a sense of increased self-understanding brought about through historical insight. In fact, the infant lived, the son of two parents metaphorically associated with liberalism, the assassinated woman, and the doctor, who had left Madrid because of his involvement in revolutionary politics, and who attended her giving birth.

The narrative presents a notably Proustian character, by emphasizing subjectivity and introspection, foregrounding aspects of memory and the act of remembering, and juxtaposing diverse planes of temporality, consciousness and location, with a wealth of perceptual and cognitive detail. The journey of historical investigation, however, entails risks of. And in spite of the pitfalls of subjectivity, historical relativism, ignorance and epistemological limitations, Jinete affirms, in its overarching thematic development, that history may be understood as a social signifier that gives meaning to present identity.

In the context of , when it was published, the novel is thus evocative of a growing impulse to overturn the tacit Pacto de Olvido imposed during the post-Franco transition. Conclusions: Considered together, Azul, Savolta and Jinete offer a complimentary range of literary styles. In contrast to this pessimistic formulation of postmodernism, El jinete polaco offers an optimistic, modern sensibility with implications of ethical engagement. Its vindication of the oppressed other, in terms of gender, ethnicity, religion, and geographic and cultural periphery, articulated in a humanistic framework, does not invert terms of hierarchical dehumanization.

I think it would be difficult to find a better combination of three exemplary historical novels to represent both outstanding expressions of literary possibility and treatments of profoundly important historical issues in Spain for the period from to , as well as before and after. Jinete was also awarded the Premio Planeta for The awards jury for the Premio Nacional de Narrativa, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, is also comprised of a nation-wide selection of representatives of distinguished cultural institutions, as well as one or more prize-winning authors from previous years.

Carbonell reads Azul differently than I do, affirming that Azul presents a clear distinction between the Jews as good and the Christians as evil, and engages in the very act of demonization of the other which it thematically denounces Another historical novel centered on a strong female protagonist that has received a lot of critical attention is Urraca , by Lourdes Ortiz.

Numerous recent monographs attest to the continued interest in the relationship of Spanish literature and culture to postmodernism. Mendoza notes his use of historical sources on owner class sponsored terrorism in the composition of his novel. Assassinations by the left and the right increased in number through the period of , to the extent that Brenan lists people shot in the street in Barcelona in Lyotard is one influential source of definition of postmodernism who subsumes modernism—in his case understood more as the literary avant-garde—in postmodernism. Alonso uses Savolta as an example of this transition see his work form , , and , which is also discussed by Amell, Arizmendi, and Sanz Villanueva.

Influential proponents of this sort of literary postmodernism as distinct from modernism include Hutcheon, McHale, Eco and Barth. Soubeyroux comments on its application to Savolta, particularly in relation to parody. Spanish crime novels, parodic, postmodern and otherwise are another category of post-Franco literature that has received a lot of critical attention.

I think that parody and social realism are both fundamental in Savolta, in what may be termed postmodernist double-voicing. Oropesa disagrees at some length with Benson , affirming the fundamental importance of social realism in the novel See Tremlett for a full discussion of this historical amnesia.
